Language Access Handbook and New Bilingual Staff Training Video

An updated Language Access Handbook is now available for review by all DOE school staff who communicate with families. The handbook will be reviewed during the required Language Access Coordinator (LAC) training in October, as mentioned in the August 27 edition of Principal Digest; however, BCO staff who communicate with families are encouraged to refer to the handbook.

The Bilingual Staff Training Video is also available and provides guidance for DOE bilingual staff who volunteer to provide interpretation assistance for their school community. Bilingual staff are encouraged to watch the seven-minute video for best practices when interpreting for families, which includes information on interpreter ethics and the importance of neutrality, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity. The Language Access Handbook, Bilingual Staff Training Video, and other resources are saved on the Translation & Interpretation Unit Resources InfoHub page.
