Queens Parent Advisory Board Meeting 2/25 Topic – Rights of Special Needs Children, IEPs, and Parent Advocacy

Queens Borough President Sharon Lee invites you to her next Parent Advisory Board meeting that will be held on Tuesday February 25, 2020 at 6pm in Room 200 at Queens Borough Hall located at 120-55 Queens Blvd in Kew Gardens.

We will host several guest speakers who will speak on the rights of special needs children and how to navigate the NYC Department of Education if your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and how to better advocate for your child.

Our guest speakers will be Mary Jo Pisacano – Director of Special Education at Queens North Field Support Center at the Department of Education who will talk about the process to obtain an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and the process that follows and resources available for parents.  We will also have Paola Martínez Boone who is the Senior Advocate in the Disability Justice Program at the not-for-profit called New York Lawyers for the Public Interest who will speak about advocacy and IEP’s. We will also have Sherry Algredo who is the Chair of the Education Committee on Community Board 9 who will share her experience as a mother of a special needs child and will give some tips on how parents could better navigate the education system.
